Financial Planning Analyst

Summary

Reporting to the Director of Financial Analysis, the Capital Planning Analyst position will be a broad role responsible for financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, operational analysis, margin analysis, and other financial and non-financial analysis that contributes to the achievement of organizational growth and profitability goals.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct analysis for planning activities including capital long-range planning processes
  • Assists with supplementary project evaluations on capital, corporate benchmarking, and metrics
  • Reports on the impact of capital.
  • Prepare internal and external financial analyses on projects and formulate recommendations.
  • Review and help prioritize profit-generating projects in each business segment.
  • Define and periodically revise strategy for prioritizing sustaining capital projects, which are risk, asset strategy, and business strategy.
  • Guide all stakeholders through the resource planning process.
  • Mentor Head Office administrators and analysts to encourage skills development and improve efficiency.
  • Assess current return on capital to support capital budgeting and asset allocation.
  • Support special projects including internal development and strategic planning.
  • Assist in the construction of financial budgeting, forecasting, and valuation models.
  • Assist in the completion of short-term and long-term forecast.
  • Assist in the modeling of cash flow requirements.
  • Assist in the evaluation and refinement of the costing process and the pricing model.
  • Identify financial and operational trends in business product lines.
  • Complete monthly SG&A analysis.
  • Prepare, analyze, and select methods of presenting various data.
  • Present key findings in written and verbal form.
  • Assist with the preparation of quarterly and board materials.
  • Interact with management at all levels to facilitate information gathering.
  • Manage and oversee the resolution of all third-party transportation audit claims.
  • Ad hoc financial and operational analysis as required.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field of study, required.
  • Three (3) years in planning, evaluation, business, and transportation; high-potential individuals could be considered with fewer years of relevant experience
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate a diverse set of activities to meet targets.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities along with solid attention to detail.
  • Ability to work successfully in a team environment as well as independently.

Education/Experience

The minimum education or formal training for this position includes the following Provincial/State or other vocational or professional certification, trade license, apprenticeship or degree:

  • Mandatory High School Diploma
  • Mandatory Bachelor’s Degree

At least three years of relevant internships, work placements, and post-graduate education will be considered when assessing the amount of work experience required.
