SCOPE OF POSITION

The Manager, Finance & Valuations will report to the Vice President, Finance & Valuations and will be mainly responsible for activities that support the valuation and analysis of private equity and infrastructure investments of OMERS. Primary responsibilities include hands-on development and review of valuation models, strategic planning model and various other activities in support of both the Finance Team (Valuations & Reporting) and the Deal Team, as required. 

To support these responsibilities, the successful candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, experience in financial reporting and analysis, a solid grounding in valuations and financial modeling and a willingness to learn new skills and systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Valuation

  • Responsible for the hands-on development and review of private equity and/or infrastructure portfolio investment valuations on a quarterly and annual basis
  • Help complete the execution of internal quarterly and annual valuation projects, including the development of valuation models and drafting of valuation memos
  • Align with the Directors, Vice President, Finance & Valuations, Vice President, Investment Finance and the Managing Director, Investment Risk Management in assisting with the strategic planning process, which includes regularly developing and maintaining financial models and forecasting, budgeting and projecting investment values and returns for the portfolio investments
  • Identify value opportunities and risks in the portfolio
  • Liaise with the Deal Team to review past performance, strategy, outlook, regulatory and other relevant issues that could impact values of portfolio investments
  • Monitor market events and provide analysis on the impact these events may have on the valuation of an asset and update the valuation models accordingly
  • Liaise with external auditors and valuators to support valuation conclusions
  • Provide valuation analysis on potential new investments or investment alternatives for existing investments in support of decision-making
  • Assist with other financial reporting valuation requirements such as impairment testing, purchase price allocations or other valuations disclosures
  • Review and monitor existing valuation processes and systems for sufficient controls, identify opportunities to increase efficiencies and assist in the implementation of strategic initiatives to promote the continuous improvement of valuation policies, procedures, and processes
  • Stays abreast of trends and developments in the valuations field, help educate the team and seek out opportunities both to increase knowledge and demonstrate subject matter expertise on valuation practices
  • Provide ongoing assistance to the Finance Team, Deal Team, Risk Team or investment entities, as required

Other:

  • Assist with the review of Deal Team models involving acquisitions & dispositions
  • Conduct model audits of acquisition models to examine model performance and integrity
  • Assist in the preparation of internal and external financial reports, including working closely with the Finance Reporting Team, as required
  • Attend or participate in Finance Team, Deal Team and Risk Team meetings, as appropriate
  • Participate in special projects or duties, as required

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5-8 years of valuations and accounting experience
  • Chartered Accountant and Chartered Business Valuation designations
  • Experience in financial reporting
  • Strong excel and modeling skills, including the ability to work with complex financial models
  • Highly motivated individual with a proven track record to deliver results and execute effectively on key initiatives in both the short-term and long-term
  • Effective organization, time management, and communication skills
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and accurately (both written and verbal)
  • Ability to perform under time pressure and respond to unexpected events or circumstances
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to motivate others
  • Strong team player
  • Ability to work with management at all levels
  • Knowledge in private equity or infrastructure is an asset
